Here’s the 33rd page of my forty page contribution to the Art House Co-op Sketchbook Project that is currently touring various galleries and museums around the US.
It’s a drawing of an idea I had for a sculpture that is basically a long-legged version my Nail Box piece (see photo below). I like messing about with proportions and am quite interested in unstable structures so in this drawing I gave the nail box unnecessarily long and spindly legs.
I probably got the idea from the time that I exhibited Nail Box at an art fair in Battersea, London a couple of years ago. The piece was mounted on a tall plinth that placed the work at roughly shoulder height. The only problem was that every now and then one of the sculpture's protruding nails would snag on the strap of a passer-by's bag and decide to go with them. I had to keep a close eye on it the whole time and always managed to catch it just in time but it was a bloody nightmare.

Nail Flare Box
I made this drawing around about the time that I was working on the internal nail box structure for my Frankenstein’s Orifice Box sculpture. For my new series of orifice box sculptures I plan to mount the cube sections on rickety frame structures (instead of the usual wheels) at head-height or above.

Art House Co-op Sketchbook Project (Page 32)
Here’s the 32nd page of my forty page contribution to the Art House Co-op Sketchbook Project that is currently touring various galleries and museums around the US.
The drawing is of an idea that I had for a sculpture and the sculpture itself was inspired by a strange little occurrence. A few years ago I was swimming in the sea in Goa, India when I noticed a plumb-sized seed pod floating past me. I picked up the pod to have a closer inspection and as I did so a small colony if tiny crabs decided to disembark onto my hand. I don’t know how far these mini refugees had travelled on the back of their successfully sea-worthy vessel but it gave me the idea to sketch the colonisation of a moon or planetoid that is obviously too small to support such a colony.

It’s a drawing of an idea that I had for a multi-story box structure. I quite like the thought of making some unstable sculptures but I know that if I do ever get round to building them I’d only worry about them getting knocked over when I come to exhibit them. Maybe I’ll have to construct them with some hidden supports.

If you know my work (especially my sculptures) then you’ll probably realise that I have a bit of a thing for boxes and for using hair as a sculptural material. I’m quite pleased with how the hair turned out in this sketch. It can be a tricky thing the draw – sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.

This is a quick drawing that I made of a half-hearted sculpture that I started a few years ago and which has just sat, unfinished, in bits around my studio. The sculpture originally started off after I had one of those uncontrollable urges to do something mischievous. I noticed an acoustic guitar sitting in the corner of the room and wondered what would happen if I ran it through my band saw. After chopping off the rounded end of the instrument I thought it would make an interesting central column around which to build an integrated framework of boxes and other structures. I’m sure that I’ll get round to finishing it one day – maybe!
